Cálem Cellars · Vila Nova de Gaia (Porto)
Cálem's lodge is in Vila Nova de Gaia, across the river from Porto, where the Port houses have aged their wine for centuries. The one-hour visit combines an interactive museum on the Douro, a 30-minute cellar tour and a tasting. It is a short introduction, not a day trip.

The Port lodges are not in the Douro Valley, and not quite in Porto either. They line the riverbank in Vila Nova de Gaia, a short walk over the Dom Luís I bridge, where the cooler coastal air suited the ageing wine. Cálem, founded in 1859, is one of the houses with a lodge on the waterfront.
The visit starts with an interactive museum of about 15 minutes on the Douro region, its terraces and how Port is made. A guide then takes you through the cellars for 30 minutes, among the casks and vats. The standard tasting is a Cálem Fine White and a 10 Years Old Tawny; other options go up to three Ports or a pairing with chocolate or cheese.
Guests describe it as a quick intro rather than a wine-expert visit, and that is the right way to see it. It works as a primer before a valley day, or as the Port experience if you have no time for the Douro. It is wheelchair accessible, which most valley tours are not.
A self-paced museum on the Douro region and Port.
A guide takes you through the Cálem cellars in Gaia.

No. Gaia is where Port ages and ships from; the vineyards are about 100 km east. Our day-trip guide covers getting there.
