Quinta do Bomfim (Symington family) · Pinhão
Quinta do Bomfim belongs to the Symington family and has made wine for Dow's since 1896. The 90-minute visit takes in a small museum, a vineyard walk, the old lodge and a tasting on the terrace, in groups of ten at most. It starts at the visitor centre in Pinhão.

George Warre bought Quinta do Bomfim for Dow's in 1896, and it is still a working Symington estate for Dow's Port. The estate sits at the edge of Pinhão, with vines running from 80 to 384 metres in altitude. The visitor centre opened in 2015, and this tour starts there.
The visit starts in a small museum on the family and its wines. Then you choose one of three vineyard walks, see the 1896 lodge with its large vat and barrel cellar, and visit the winery (or watch a film of it, as the listing allows). The tasting is on the terrace: you pick three glasses from a choice of four flights, from Douro DOC to premium vintage Port and Dow's Old Tawnies.
A guest noted that the tasting leans toward Port, and that fits the estate: this is a Port house. Book it for the history and the setting. In 1.5 hours you get a focused look at how Port is made, and if you are in Pinhão anyway there is no road trip involved.
